The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report by Michael Rieley says “Big data adds up to opportunities in math careers”. Wondering about a career? consider the field of mathematical science. The BLS says the employment of mathematical science occupations is projected to grow 27.9 percent from 2016 to 2026, which is much faster than the average for all occupations, and will result in about 50,400 new jobs. Three of the four jobs are among the top 30 fastest growing occupations to 2026.
What is big data?
Big data is the term that refers to the exceptionally large amount of information, which has become available because of advances in technology. Smartphones, tablets, and Internet-connected home appliances track and store information on purchasing and item usage sometimes whether you like it or not. Appropriate use of this information can give insight into individual and consumer behavior. But the information without translation is useless. In order to translate the information, we need people who can make sense of the data. Those who have the skills from the raw data will benefit.
Job Titles associated with this surge include statisticians, mathematicians, actuaries, and research analysts.
